Who needs licenses and permits when visiting Florida? Non-residents who are 16 years of age or older are required to have Florida licenses and permits to participate in hunting, freshwater fishing and saltwater fishing. Out-of-state fishing and hunting licenses are not valid in Florida. Unless you are on a properly licensed charter boat.

Do I need a license to fish in Key West?

Yes, Key West is renowned for excellent fishing, particularly deep-sea and backcountry fishing. It’s known for its variety of fish species and diverse fishing opportunities. Here’s a more detailed look at why Key West is a great fishing destination: Deep-sea fishing: Key West offers year-round deep-sea fishing opportunities with the chance to catch fish like sailfish, blackfin tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin, and king mackerel. Backcountry fishing: The calm, shallow waters of the mangroves, bays, and channels on the Gulf side of the island make it ideal for backcountry fishing, also known as “fishing the flats”. You can target species like bonefish, permit, redfish, and snook. Other fishing opportunities: Flats fishing: Steath replaces brute force in these remote and distant fishing grounds. Reef fishing: You can target fish like grouper and snapper around reefs and wrecks. Shore fishing: Shore fishing is permitted at locations like The Edward B. Key West is known for its excellent tarpon fishery, especially during the spring and summer months when they are most active. To get the most out of your fishing trip, consider: Fishing charters: Many charter boats offer deep-sea, backcountry, and reef fishing experiences. Local bait and tackle shops: They can provide information on current fishing conditions and species. Obtaining a Florida saltwater fishing license: A license is required to fish in Key West and the Florida Keys.

Is there good fishing in Key West?

Our Story

Our Story

OUR STORY THE AWARD WINNING CAPTAINS WELCOME YOU ABOARD FOR AN UNMATCHED ADVENTURE! The name Wickers has been well-known for making waves in the Gulf stream waters, quite literally, since 1938, and from that time onwards, the Gulf stream has never seen a day without a Wickers on board. Following the family tradition of the best fishing in Key West, Capt. Bill Wickers Jr. established the LINDA D, and never stopped doing what he loved and loving what he does. His face was as familiar for the Straits of Florida, as the horizon was for him. The family business then continued to grow and was later adopted by his son, Billy, the fourth generation youngest licensed Captain in the Key West. Captain Billy practically grew up doing what he does best, fishing. To him it comes naturally, his skills speak volumes when he frequently catches what others have to wait quite a lot for. The Linda D that still stands proud, has entertained Florida State Governor, Jeb Bush and has a glamorous history of being featured in numerous films and documentaries, including Curt Gowdy of American Sportsman fame, PM Magazine and most recently the Nashville Network’s Celebrity Outdoors, starring Roger Miller and Lee Greenwood.

What do people say about Linda D Sportfishing?

We had an amazing experience with Captain Billy and First Mate Larry. We had three boys ages 15, 11, and 7 and they were fantastic with them- even in rough water conditions. They fought to help us catch Mahi Mahi which was our one goal- and they went above and beyond. Could not recommend this company more. We will be back!

Absolutely amazing experience. Took the kids for their first charter fishing experience and it did not disappoint. Ended up with a nice haul and some amazing memories. Captain and mate were both absolutely fantastic and put all of us on multiple mahi.

I recently did a half day charter on the Linda D with capt Will and first mate Larry. We caught fish. The first mate is a beast that never stopped working to make that happen. It's a comfortable boat with 3 fighting chairs so all you have to do is sit, relax and wait to be handed a reel with a "fish on!". We had a blast. Many thanks to the Linda D crew for making our charter a fantastic day on the water.

Our trip on Linda V was the best! AJ is the best mate ever. He was kind, fun and great to talk with not to mention very capable. He did everything but reel the fish in. Also gave us good recommendations on places in Key West! Went to Dante's where they cooked or fresh catch. $12 to cook including 2 sides! I would highly recommend.

Fantastic fishing trip in Key West! AJ was an awesome mate, friendly, knowledgeable, and worked hard to make sure we had a great experience. We caught mahi mahi and almaco jack, and he taught us a lot about the fish and local waters along the way.One of the highlights was when AJ filleted an almaco jack right in front of us and served it with his sauce and seasonings. It was incredibly fresh and absolutely delicious. He also shared some great local recommendations for the rest of our trip. AJ truly went above and beyond, and we highly recommend this charter!

Fishing was amazing. As soon as we started fishing they were biting. Captain Billy got us on the fish quickly for our 4 hour trip. Deckhand AJ was amazing. Took time to speak with my son on his first fishing trip about what was going on and the fish we were catching. As soon as we caught fish he had the lines back in ready to go. Fishing was not stop. Unforgettable experience. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to fish in the Key West area.

Captain Tom and AJ were so much fun to go on our first deep sea charter with! They really knew their stuff and took care of everything. I was a little nauseous/sea sick and AJ really helped accommodate and make me feel better! We had the absolute best time and I am so thankful to have been able to fish with them!

Captain Phil and mate Ryan were fantastic. We started the day trolling in hopes to catch Mahi but after communicating with other captains it seemed that they were slow to bite that morning. We so appreciated them suggesting deep dropping for other fish. Wow! What a treat that was as we caught various snapper, snowy grouper, tile, and some other unique fish. They were knowledgeable and professional and it was an outstanding day. We have charted before and fish frequently in Florida but will definitely be back to fish with the Linda D IV team again. Thanks again for a great day!

Captain Phil and first mate Ryan were extremely knowledgeable and professional. What began with a slow bite trolling for mahi and other species led to the Linda D IV team changing our plan and deep dropping for other fish. We caught tile, grouper, yellow eyed and vermillion snapper. We appreciated their willingness to change up the day and we had an outstanding trip. We will be back!

We had an awesome trip with Linda D Sportfishing in Key West and can’t recommend them enough. Captain Tom and first mate AJ made the whole experience top notch from start to finish. We spent the day fishing the reef for Cero mackerel, and the action was great—everyone in our group caught fish, which says a lot. AJ really stood out—super personable, incredibly knowledgeable, and made everything easy to understand. Whether you’re a total beginner or have some experience, he makes sure you’re comfortable and having a great time. The boat itself was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, which made the whole trip even better. One of the coolest parts was that AJ filleted some of the fish right on the boat, seasoned it, and let us try fresh sashimi out at sea—such a unique touch you don’t get everywhere. After the trip, he filleted the rest of our catch and gave us great recommendations on where to bring it to have it cooked for dinner, which was the perfect way to end the day.Overall, an amazing experience. If you’re in Key West and thinking about a fishing charter, this is the one—highly recommend for anyone.

We just got back from an excellent private charter with Linda D. Our mate AJ and Captain Tom were the best. We hit the reefs first to catch our fill. It was non-stop. Didn’t have a minute to take a break. The headed out to the deeper water to round out the day. When we got back AJ filleted all of our catch and was nice enough to drive us down to Kaya for lunch where they took our catch and made us a wonderful late lunch. I would highly recommend Linda D. You won’t be disappointed.

After the trip, he filleted the rest of our catch and gave us great recommendations on where to bring it to have it cooked for dinner, which was the perfect way to end the day. Overall, an amazing experience. If you’re in Key West and thinking about a fishing charter, this is the one—highly recommend for anyone.

My boyfriend and I booked a half day off-shore fishing trip March 31st. Originally, it was for the 30th, but Billy went with caution and booked us Tuesday due to weather. Smart move. We went out at 1pm. I'm as new as can be to fishing, but my boyfriend is far from a newbie. The water was rough due to wind, but Billy and AJ were awesome! We each caught a baracuda, and I caught a Mackerel that we then got cooked up at a local restaurant. 10/10 recommend, and we will be back to fish with these two.

This was our second time using Linda D’s. We cannot say enough good things about the experience. Booking online was easy. They contacted us the day before to confirm arrival time. We had Captain Tom and First Mate, AJ. They asked what we wanted to fish for and off we went to catch live bait first then into the bigger fish. AJ was extremely knowledgeable about fishing and techniques. Capt Tom took us to the right spots and AJ geared us up and we brought home several nice fish. Highly recommend Linda D’s. We will be back for sure!!

Couldn’t have asked for a better day on the water. Billy and AJ brought us exactly where we needed to be to get some fish on the line. Caught the biggest amberjack I’d ever seen with Billy back when I was a kid and now 15 years later he took us out again and I got to one up myself. Best captain on Key West.

These guys are fire!!!! We spent four days on Key West and really wanted to deep sea fish while we were there, met AJ in town and later that night captain Billy said he would be able to take us Friday morning! They keep things lively and super fun aboard their boat! We met another super awesome couple and solo fisher that chartered with us! With five fishers, captain and mate there was plenty of room as we took turns on the reels. The price was affordable, for last minute booking. The crew was fantastic and knew right where the fish were! In 3 1/2 hours 5 people caught 19 fish… Thanks for a great experience! And a special shout out to the crew, you guys are awesome we will be back…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Linda D Sportfishing is top-notch. After being stood up by another charter right on the dock, they didn’t hesitate to accommodate me and make sure I still got out fishing.Captain Billy and first mate AJ found mahi in January when other boats weren’t catching fish. We landed four solid fish for the table. The boat was immaculate, the gear was in great shape and worked flawlessly, and the crew was professional and friendly. If you’re looking for a great charter and a guaranteed good time, I highly recommend Linda D Sportfishing.

We had the best day yesterday deep sea fishing with Linda D sport fishing charters. This was our first time ever going deep sea fishing and the crew was amazing. Capt. Tom knew the exact area to go and depth to find the mahi mahi that we was fishing for. I can't say enough about first mate Jesse other than that he was absolutely amazing. Jesse made it so easy for us first timers and was on top of his game. Jesse was constantly baiting our lines and trying different methods to help us catch fish. I've never seen someone work so hard at his job, like I said he was Amazing. Once we departed the boat Jesse took pictures of our catch with us and then began prepping our fish for us. Jesse fillet our fish for us and placed them on ice. Jesse even referred us to a local restaurant that would cook them for us and how to have them cooked. We took the fish to the restaurant that evening that Jesse recommend and they cooked them for us. The fish came out fried, grill, and blacken along with fries and coleslaw it was so delicious. Again Jesse pointed us in the right direction for dinner. It was truly an awesome day for our family and one that we will never forget. Thank you, Linda D charters and Jesse and Tom, for making this a wonderful memory for all of us.

We had a fantastic charter today even though the weather was less than ideal. Captain Billy brought us out to the edge of the reef and we caught 8 barracuda right away - as the seas started to get bigger we headed in to anchor and catch lunch - snapper, mackerel and 5 sharks!! What an incredible experience! AJ was first mate and worked so hard to make our trip comfortable and successful! thank you both so much!

We had an incredible experience on this charter, and it wasn’t just because we were the only one out of about 16 boats that landed a sailfish. What really set this crew apart was their effort, attitude, and how great they were with my son. They were patient, encouraging, and made sure he was involved every step of the way—especially when it came time to reel in the fish. That moment alone made the trip unforgettable for us. You could tell they genuinely cared about the experience, not just the outcome. They were constantly adjusting—changing baits, trying new techniques, and never just “going through the motions.” They clearly knew what they were doing and worked hard to give us the best possible chance at a big fish. You can’t ever guarantee something like a sailfish, but I knew without a doubt we were in the best hands to make it happen. If you’re looking for a crew that works hard, adapts, and treats your family like their own, this is the charter to book. We’ll absolutely be back.

We had an excellent time fishing with captain Billy and first mate Jesse! I already was happy when Billy contacted me before we left regarding a cold front coming in and it would be advantageous to change our first scheduled day since conditions would be favorable. I'm so glad we did! The boat was equipped with everything we needed - had a bathroom, mini fridge for your lunch, they provided a cooler with plenty of water for the day which was very nice. We had fun catching a variety of fish over two full day outings, including mahi mahi, Bonita, different types of mackerel, barracuda, one little tuna and the biggie: a white marlin, which was an unexpected surprise for us all and the highlight of our outings. Jesse worked tirelessly the entire time and helped us take great photos/videos of our catches. Once we returned back to the dock, he filleted our catches for us and recommended some great area restaurants that will prepare it in a variety of delicious ways for you. If you want a great day with kind, knowledgeable folks who will work hard to make your day memorable, I highly recommend booking with Linda D!
